② Show Programme
Various performances throughout the show were used to demonstrate the theme of "Awaji Island" - viewers were able to understand and enjoy the charms of Awaji Island which were expressed abstractly through visual and musical means. An overview of the performances presented within the show can be found below.
In a search for her happiness, Alice setsout to reach Awaji Island, where many happy people live - yet, she didn't know how to get there. Suddenly, a white rabbit appeared who told her the way, which was by crossing the Akashi Kaikyō Bridge. Although the bridge is a place where pedestrians cannot pass, the rabbit asserts that with excellent balancing skills, anyone can make it across!
In the performance, the Akashi Kaikyō Bridge, the world's second-longest suspension bridge makes an appearance and serves as the gateway to Awajiland.

During a conversation between Alice and the Cheshire Cat, a loud noise is suddenly heard nearby. It seems that a miracle is occuring at Awaji Hanasajiki, a beautiful flower field on Awaji Island.
The miracle that Alice witnesses at Awaji Hanasajiki is conveyed through an energetic and powerful performance of jump rope and taiko drums.

Alice decides to seek advice from the god of happiness Ebisu at the Awaji Puppet Theatre, but must transform into a puppet in order to speak with him. After undergoing a miraculous transformation, Alice is able to talk to Ebisu and receive his wisdom.
During a dialogue between the two characters, they engage in an "Ebisu Dance", a performance with 500 years of history that connects to Awaji Puppet Theatre.

In one number, the performance depicts the jumping fish commonly seen near Awaji Island.

Upon discovering Alice's love for drinking tea, Ebisu recommends to her a specialty of Awaji Island: onion soup, made from Awaji Island's famous onions. In that moment, the joyful Mad Hatter makes an appearance, with a whimsical plate-spinning performance it's a delightful onion soup party!
Awaji Island is known for its sweet onions, and the performance is intended to celebrate their deliciousness.

In addition to Awaji Hanasajiki, Alice discovers another place where miracles occur —the Naruto Whirlpools. Alice is soon swept away by the whirlpools, which transform her back into a human.
The force of the whirlpools is expressed through a dynamic performance featuring freestyle basketball and taiko drums.

Alice meets with the Cheshire Cat once again, who tells her about a peculiar fragrance coming from nearby - it is the scent of incense! The Cheshire Cat tells Alice that Awaji Island's incense is special, and said to bring joy. Perhaps Alice might find her happiness through experiencing it. Soon, they discover a mysterious caterpillar living in a certain incense factory.
The performance introduces the fact that Awaji Island has many incense factories and highlights that 70% of incense in Japan is actually produced on Awaji Island.

Continuing her journey on Awaji Island, Alice encounters a lively procession of creatures and people who are playing with a curious instrument. The Cheshire Cat tells her that they are party horns, a tool for people to express their enjoyment. Alice decides to join in and play along, experiencing the fun for herself.
The performance showcases party horns, which are famously made on Awaji Island.

After joining the lively procession, Alice finds herself at Izanagi Shrine, where a grand ball is soon to be held. There, she witnesses a sacred dance of red-crowned cranes, as well as a dance performed by playing cards, before finally meeting the Queen and King of Hearts.
In this performance, utilizing footage of Izanagi Shrine, the production introduces one of Japan's representative shrines, including Awaji Island.

③ Alice in Awajiland Original Song Lyrics
Alice in Awajiland
Arrangement: Ayumi Omori
Lyrics: Elena Gradkovskaya
Translation: Ryo Oguri

Alice in Awajiland
How do I get to Awajiland
This is my dream, I hope it comes true
I heard people are happy there
I was the happiest child
I used to feel happiness inside
One day I woke up and felt empty
Happiness left my chest
It left me along
Seems like it can go
Happiness can walk around
It must be somewhere where people feel happy
Alice in Awajiland
A lot of happiness is on Awajiland
I have to find the reason
I wonder why
Alice in Awajiland
How do I get to Awajiland
This is my dream I hope it comes true
I heard people are happy there
When clouds go rolling by
They roll away and leave the sky
Where is the land beyond the eye
The happiest Island I know
Why can it be
Why people feel so happy
I can find answers there
I must get to Awajiland by the sunny afternoon
Alice in Awajiland
Where is the path to Awajiland?
Over the bridge or under it
I wonder where
Ask Alice
Arrangement: Ayumi Omori
Lyrics: Elena Gradkovskaya
Translation: Ryo Oguri
Editing: Mai Moriguchi
One way makes you larger
And the other makes you small
And the way that mother taught you
Doesn't lead anywhere at all
Go ask Alice
When she’ll ten steps go
And if you go chasing rabbits
And you know you're going to fail
Talk to caterpillar enjoying incense
she will give a sense of being doll
Call Alice
When she will be a doll
When the drop of Naruto-whirlpools
jumps up and shows you where to go.
You might meet some kind of miracle
and feel that time is moving slow
Go ask Alice
I think she'll know
When logic and proportion
disappear straight away
And the Hatter is spinning soup plates
King and Heart Queen are out for card play
Remember what Cheshire Cat said
Find your way
Find your way
Cheshire Cat's Theme
Arrangement: Ayumi Omori
Lyrics: Elena Gradkovskaya
Translation: Ryo Oguri
Editing: Mai Moriguchi
You can try to go to the left
You can try to go to the right
It doesn’t matter where to go
If you don’t know what do you want
Awaji is full of amazing possibilities
But it’s better to set the goal
Alice: I want to be happy. How do I get there, Cheshire?
Where you have to go
Depend on where you want to get to
If you go through different experiences
You will find what makes you happy
Awaji is full of amazing experiences
Try all and you will find what makes you happy
Alice: So, I should try different things and find what I like the most, right, Cheshire?
You can try to go to the left
You can try to go to the right
If you really know what do you like
Follow your heart and go long enough
Awaji is full of amazing possibilities
set the goal and follow your heart
Alice: How do I know if I'm on the right path?
The world always communicates with us
Through different small and big signs
Pay attention to the environment
And you will be able to feel right way
Awaji is full of different signs
Pay attention and feel your way
Flying Fish's Theme
Arrangement: Ayumi Omori
Lyrics: Elena Gradkovskaya
Translation: Ryo Oguri
Editing: Mai Moriguchi
I’m underwater spinning around
Watching out and saying wish aloud
I’m swimming around
I'm flinging out, where am I now?
Upside down and I can't stop it now
You can't stop me now, oh
I, I can dive
I, I can fly
When the sun is coming out
I do feel free to roam around
I’m the happiest fish around
Don't you try to stop me
I, I can fly
I swam far from Awajiland
But found myself in these waters again
This is true. I don’t pretend.
I fly just here because I can!
I, I can dive
I, I can fly
When the sun is coming out
I do feel free to roam around
I’m the happiest fish around
Don't you try to stop me
I, I can fly

World of Awaji

Lyrics: Elena Gradkovskaya

Cats and rabbits
will meet you in complex situations
Try to keep your mind quite calm and patient
In the world of Awaji
All the flowers
Here have very special powers
To make miracles for hours
When you’re here in a world of Awaji
Here’re holy birds
They will meet and lead you to the holy gates
Where everyone will have a special date
Within that world of Awaji
You can listen to a whirlpools
And see a dance of God of Happiness
Please believe this World exists
Because this is a real world of Awajiland
A Happy Alice

New experience and new friends around
I'm on Awaji Island, I am feeling proud
Yeah, new friends around
It was my dream, here I am now.
I’m feeling happiness, I can't stop it now
Noone can stop it now, oh
I, I know now
How to feel fine
When I’m lost, feeling down
I should call my friends around,
Singing a song of joyful sound
Don't you try to stop me
I, I know now
I found myself in Awajiland
And found my happiness again
This is real and not pretend
I took this way until the end
I, I know now
How to feel fine
When I’m lost, feeling down
I should call my friends around,
Singing a song of joyful sound
Don't you try to stop me
I, I know now
④ Comments from our Audience

I enjoyed seeing amazing performances from different countries. My child loved it!
You don't get to see performances like this every day - I was glued to my seat! And it was a wonderful experience for my child.

With both circus and musical elements, it was a superb show, perfect for the kids too!
The combination of traditional Awaji artistic culture and world circus performance was extravagant - and the view of the ocean was amazing!

Really great show. My 3-year-old relative was enamored and grinning the whole time.
Artists, music, costumes...it was amazing! The fusion of Japanese culture was great too. (Taiko, puppets & artists) Would recommend this event to anyone!

The message of the show that the happiness is inside us resonated with me and it was a great experience to witness abilities that I had never seen before.

⑥ Cultural Tours Around Awaji Island for Participating Artists
As far as the aim of the Awaji Art Circus is to help revitalize Awaji Island, participating artists come to Awaji not only to perform at different locations, but also to learn about and experience the local appeal and culture and then spread the word about the island worldwide. That’s why we prepared various touristic and cultural programs for them during the downtime of the Festival.
We took the artists around the island and showed them the key Awaji venues, including the historical and meaningful Izanagi Shrine, the magnificent Honpukuji Water Temple designed by architect Tadao Ando, the marvelous Naruto whirlpools etc.
To help the artists get a better idea of Japanese culture and experience local traditions, we organized several workshops, such as Japanese drums, fukimodoshi – party horn making, Japanese paper-making, incense-making, Awaji puppets etc.
